When Benny Møller Meyer, former Global QA Manager at Roblon, joined the practical Sustainable Business Change Manager programme, his mission was clear: to put corporate sustainability and responsiblity (CSR) on the agenda at Roblon A/S.
With headquarters in Frederikshavn, Denmark, and production facilities in both Gærum, Denmark, and North Carolina, USA, Roblon A/S provides high-performance fiber-optic cable solutions and technologies to major global players in the telecommunications and energy sectors.
Like many companies, Roblon had started facing increasing CSR/ESG-related demands from investors and customers, who were placing greater emphasis on green profiles and sustainability throughout the supply chain.
Despite having over a decade of leadership experience in environmental management, occupational health, and quality, Benny knew it was time to expand his knowledge, toolbox, and network.
Sustainability with a Practical Mindset
Benny’s approach to CSR/ESG is both ambitious and pragmatic.
While he is known for his calm and measured manner, behind that exterior lies a strong drive to achieve results and create meaningful impact.
As an experienced environmental manager, Benny was already familiar with waste reduction strategies, achieving nearly 100% recycling of all waste fractions at Roblon.
But when he formally took on CSR responsibilities, he recognized that the breadth and complexity of the sustainability agenda would be a demanding challenge.
For Benny, sustainability is about balancing vision with practicality, taking it one step at a time. As he puts it:
“Working with corporate sustainability means taking small steps while committing to big responsibilities.”
Roblon’s First Steps
To begin with, the primary focus was getting Roblon’s internal CSR framework in place. Conducting analyses, establishing policies, and creating a strategic foundation with clear goals.
The next phase involved developing action plans, forming a CSR organization, and communicating progress. One year later, Roblon’s first CSR report was published.
While some may see CSR reports as mere formalities, for Benny, it represented a major milestone that aligned with the action plan he had outlined in his final project for the Sustainable Business Change Manager programme.
“When I look back at my action plan from the programme and see it come to life at Roblon, I feel truly proud. Our CSR report is more than just documentation. It’s a commitment to making a difference,” Benny reflects.
“But what I’m most proud of is empowering employees, helping them build the confidence and motivation to use their skills and make a real impact in both their careers and the company.”
The Sustainability Journey Continues
Roblon’s CSR transition journey is far from over. The next step – fully in line with the strategy – is shifting from CSR as compliance and risk management to a business-driven approach that strengthens brand differentiation, product development, and global customer relationships.
To support this transition, Roblon has:
- Launched an internal awareness campaign and sustainability training for all employees.
- Set clear expectations for suppliers to begin their own sustainability efforts.
Benny himself stays up to date by actively engaging in a closed alumni network for certified Sustainable Business Change Managers. This exclusive forum provides him with:
- Peer-to-peer sparring with other sustainability professionals.
- Insights into emerging trends and best practices.
- Practical tools for sustainability strategy and change management.
By staying connected to this network, Benny ensures that Roblon remains at the forefront of evolving sustainability requirements and stakeholder expectations.
“Beyond the tools and knowledge, I’ve gained a much broader perspective on sustainability and a deeper understanding of what sustainability commitments truly require from a company like Roblon,” Benny explains.
“At the end of the day, I just want to be where I can make a difference.”
Benny’s Top 3 Tips for Practical Sustainability
- Set ambitious, long-term goals—but be prepared for a long journey. The key ingredients? Persistence, resilience, and patience.
- Engage your colleagues by translating CSR into business language. Make it as practical and concrete as possible – turning sustainability jargon into everyday actions.
- Join a strong network of professionals working with CSR in different ways. This will keep you sharp, expose you to new trends, and help you navigate stakeholder expectations.
